Ales diei nuntius (Prudentius)

Meter: 8.8.8.8

Melody: d c d f g f e d

Latinam

Ales diei nuntius

lucem propinquam praecinit;

nos excitator mentium

iam Christus ad vitam vocat.

"Auferte - clamat - lectulos

aegros, soporos, desides;

castique, recti ac sobrii

vigilate; iam sum proximus".

Ut, cum coruscis flatibus

aurora caelum sparserit,

omnes labore exercitos

confirmet ad spem luminis,

Iesum ciamus vocibus

flentes, precantes, sobrii;

intenta supplicatio

dormire cor mundum vetat.

Tu, Christe, somnum disice,

tu rumpe noctis vincula,

tu solve peccatum vetus

novumque lumen ingere.

Sit, Christe, rex piisime,

tibi Patrique gloria

cum Spiritu Paraclito,

in sempiterna saecula. Amen.

English

The winged messenger of the day

the approaching daylight, he foretells;

us, the Rouser of minds

now Christ to life calls.

Take up - He cries out - your beds

the sick, the sleepy, the sluggish;

and ye chaste, upright and sobre

keep watch; now I am near.

That, with flashing blasts,

the dawn may strew the heavens,

may it confirm by the hope of light

all those who have been working with toil,

Let us call Jesus with voices

weeping, entreating, sobre;

the intense supplication

prevents the pure heart to sleep.

Thee, Christ, dispel the sleep,

Thee, break the chains of night,

Thee, undo the ancient sin

and the new light, pour in.

May it be, O Christ, King most loving,

and to Thee, Father: Glory

with the Spirit Paraclete,

in everlasting ages. Amen.
